The Geneva Peace Conference proposed the split of Vietnam after Vietnamese nationalists led by Ho Chi Minh defeated France in 1954. War began again when the North Vietnam infiltrated South Vietnam. In August 1964, North Vietnamese gunboats allegedly fired on a US Navy ship and US President Lyndon Johnson sent troops to Vietnam in 1965.
During the Cold War, the USSR and the US competed for dominance. President Johnson chose to enter the Vietnam War because he believed that if one nation becomes a communist country then its neighboring countries were likely to do so as well (domino theory). This is why the US needed to support any anti-communist regime.
The Vietnam War was difficult to fight because the US did not have clear military targets in the North. The South Vietnam army did not want to fight, they did not believe as strongly in the cause as the North did. In 1965, the US drove North Vietnam across the 17th parallel, which is the North Vietnam border, but China threatened that they would join the war if the US continued north. North Vietnam launched massive strikes in South Vietnam in 1968. The US citizens began to loose support for the war and protested after a story was leaked to the press that told how mistakenly My Lai, a small village, was massacred in an effort to drive out spies. After Nixon was elected in 1969, he increased bombing of North Vietnam until 1972 when a ceasefire was negotiated. North Vietnam agreed to stay out of South Vietnam.
Protests in the US were sparked due to the long drawn out war. Students burned their draft cards and veterans were treated like villains. Citizens were in an outcry regarding the Vietnam War, which was escalated after information was leaked to the papers that criticized decisions that US leaders had made. Nixon tried to cover up the information and in 1972 he sent burglars to the Watergate building to find information. Nixon resigned in 1974 to avoid impeachment. In 1975 North Vietnam re-invaded South Vietnam. President Ford decided not to interfere and Vietnam became a communist country.
